Fave Albums of 2022!

VOLCANO is about to turn three years old! We may be only a toddler but 2022 has seen us on a growth spurt and VOLCANO can be heard as in-flight audio on over 20 airlines, on cable networks, on satellite and via apps and digital streams across Bali, Indonesia, and the planet! We broadcast ONLY BALINESE independent and alternative, commercial-free, 24x364!

2022 has been a wild year for releases by Balinese bands - creativity is boiling, digital distribution is now mainstream and VOLCANO loves riding the wave! This week KATIE @katkills has picked just four of her many fave albums to spin this year…

GALIJU @galijumusic released not ONE but TWO albums in 2022. What’s crazy is that both were released on the same day! “Resonant” is one album in two flavours, the original (black cover) and an instrumental version (white cover) - perfect for late-night banjar karaoke!

GALIJU may have unintentionally started a trend with their instrumental release of “Resonant”. A few weeks after the vocal-less release by Galiju, those kontrakultura mercenaries, GEEKSMILE @geekssmile coughed up an instrumental version of their classic 2010 album “Upeti Untuk Macan Asia”. Oh, so wonderful, likely just a strange coincidence!

In April ROBOKIDS @robokids.official dropped “Waking Up”. At the time we predicted it could be the album of the year - and we weren’t wrong! Their previous singles “Bright Song” and “Amnesia & Phobia” got reworked and the new tracks rapidly became VOLCANO fan favourites! We haven’t done the official stats yet, but our gut feeling is that ROBOKIDS were the most-played band on VOLCANO in 2022.

OK, this one is a bit of a radical pick… THE BARDOGS @thebardogsbali haven’t fully released their album “Top Of The World” but they do keep drip-feeding individual tracks. VOLCANO has heard enough of it to know it’s going to be massive with the release coinciding with an international tour coming up real soon. The production is amazing, it sounds like the album was recorded somewhere like Nashville, but nope - it was grown here on the island!

One of KATIE’s constant companions this year has been the cassette release of KANEKURO’s @kanekuro_ “Apologia”. The band call it an EP, but it’s LP length, so go figure. It’s surf/post-punk at its finest (but seriously, can anyone in Kanekuro actually surf?). KATIE loves spinning the track, “Abhor” - it’s so 1980’s Crawley, West Sussex.

Wait for it - on next week's poster JONGO @jongo_on_air is giving us his four fave singles of 2022!
